From September 17 to September 23, 2023, the Sino-German Workshop/Symposium on "Deep-sea mining of massive sulfides: balancing impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem, technological challenges and law of the sea" took place in Changsha, Hunan Province. The workshop has four themes, which mainly included seabed resources and mineralization systems, marine geology, marine geochemistry, seabed microbiology, marine ecology, deep-sea mining, mineral processing and extractive metallurgy, and the law of the sea, with a total of 20 academic presentations. Throughout the seminar, we have enhanced our understanding of the distribution of Submarine Massive Sulfide (SMS) deposits on the seafloor, their formation mechanisms, the abundance of resources, the diversity of hydrothermal vents, environmental protection, the challenges of mining technology, the law and international cooperation, and strengthened the willingness of China and Germany to carry out comprehensive and in-depth cooperation in this field. The chairmen of this seminar are Prof. Astrid Holzheid from Kiel University and Prof. Hongbo Zhao from Central South University. The seminar was funded by the Sino-German Center for Research Promotion (Project No. GZ1703).
